Upgrading SCVMM 2012 R2 to SCVMM 2016 TP4

I’m currently in the process of upgrading my whole fabric in order to check WAP capabilities with Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016. For instance i want to try the new shield VM capability et play with network controller for NVGRE. To do so then i need to upgrade every stack to 2016 TP4. In addition Windows Azure Pack update rollup 8.1 enable supports for 2016 TP4 features.
In this article I’ll will not go through the whole process since it is quite standard now but indeed I’ll just remind the important steps to execute.
Upgrade process :
1) Uninstall VMM 2012 R2 and be sure to tick the case to retain database !
2) install ADK 10 version 1511 (can be downloaded here)
3) install VMM 2016 TP4 (can be downloaded here)
during Installation process you will have to specify your database information. Enter your existing SQL and the installation wizard will detect your existing database. Select the existing database and click Yes on the warning popup
Then click finish until the end.
4) Updates agents on host, library server and update server.
After this you are ready to go and play with the new VMM 2016 TP4 bits!
Take note that this is for a standalone VMM installation. If you are running VMM in a cluster, this process is exactly the same but you need to shutdown the cluster and do not start the cluster before both nodes are updated to VMM 2016 TP4. If a restart is required on one of the nodes, postpone this restart until the installation has been executed on all nodes.
