Deploying F5 BIG IP 12.X VE and BIG IQ VE (Hyper-V appliance) for NVGRE with SCVMM 2012 R2 or 2016 – part 2: BIG IP VM
In part 1 we’ve checked all our prerequisites. Now we can continue by creating our BIG IP VM using the VHD file downloaded from F5 site.
First of all we are going to create a Generation 1 VM with the following requirements :
2 vCPU | 4 GB of RAM | 3 NIC linked to our logical switch
Once the VM will be configured and created you will be able to decrease the amount of memory to 2GB.
We will then connect to each NIC to the 3 networks previously created PA network, External Network and Infrastructure.
Configure the Boot sequence to start from VHD and startup the VM. Once the appliance is running log in using user = root / password = default then type config
running config will allow you to configure your management port (in our case it means our nic linked to infrastructure network). I will give it ip 192.168.2.252
The setup wizard will then start and guide you to setup the device.
in order to activate your license you will need to go to this site if your appliance has no internet connectivity https://activate.f5.com/license/dossier.jsp
You can also follow this video tutorial on how to activate your license(including trial): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxmCUnrC1bU
Please take note of the Mac Address of your management NIC since the license is linked to the mac address, this means that if you need to recreate the VM you will have to reuse the same mac address if you want to keep your license valid.
Once your device is activated you will see the list of modules that you can actually use then click Next.
For NVGRE we will need LTM CGNAT and of course MGMT. In order to optimize the memory consumed, configure these modules as follow.
Then click Next and do the same for the device certificate page unless you have your own certificate which you want to import.
On platform screen you can change again Management IP parameter, fill additional info such as host name, time zone and change password for root and admin account. After applying the change since you did change the root & admin password you will have re login using new credentials.
When you log back just click on Finished from the network configuration page.
You are then done with the setup wizard.
We then need now to assign/configure our network interfaces. Go to Network then interfaces.
Check your mac addresses from the VM properties to identify which interface is what NIC. For example in my case 1.1 is PA network and 1.2 is then External Network.
Once you know which interface belong to what, move to VLANs
Click on Create from the top right corner and create 2 VLANs, one for PA network and one for External network. We will then assign interfaces to these VLANs.
At this stage we are done configuring our BIG IP.But just check into your DNS server that your big ip has been properly registered and if it is not the case, create a dns record for it.
We can now proceed to part 3 in which we will set up BIG IQ which is a requirement for NVGRE to work. VMM2012R2 talk to BIG IQ not BIG IP.
